Our dedication to Pete Harwood

Cary Pearson “Pete” Harwood passed away in 2007.  He is remembered for his devotion to his family, his strong work ethic and passion for mining.  Pete believed in a strong foundation at home and in the workplace.

After graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in mining engineering he served in the US Army in Vietnam.  From 1966-1968, he was a lieutenant attached to the 25th Infantry Division -65th Engineering Battalion.  He also served as commanding officer for the army reserve unit in Marion, VA.  Pete was a mining engineer for 42 years and worked for Jewel Smokeless, Consol, Pittston and A.T. Massey.  He was a master Mason of the Tazewell lodge.  No 62 A.F. & A. M. Of Virginia and was active in many other Masonic organizations.  He was also a member of the Virginia Forestry Educational Foundation.

Keeping his memory alive, PIC dedicates its strong work ethic and morals to Pete Harwood, and his surviving wife Suan Harwood, and his children Tracey Blalock, Laura Berry, Cary P. Harwood Jr, Kathy Douglas, Bill Harwood and Leslie Harwood.

REMEMBER THIS:

IF YOU WORK FOR A MAN, in Heaven’s name WORK for him. If he pays you wages which supply you bread and butter work for him; speak well of him; stand by him and stand by the institution he represents. If put to a pinch, an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness. If you must vilify, condemn and eternally disparage – resign your position, and when you are outside, damn to your heart’s content, but as long as you are part of the institution do not condemn it. If you do that, you are loosening the tendrils that are holding you to the institution, and at the first high wind that comes along, you will be uprooted and blown away, and probably will never know the reason why.
